Honolulu Ocean Safety to hold first lifeguard recruit tryouts of 2025

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Honolulu Ocean Safety is gearing up for its first recruit tryouts of 2025, seeking part-time, on-call contract beach lifeguards. The tryouts will take place on Friday, January 31, and Saturday, February 1, at Ala Moana Beach Park, Ewa end, starting at 8:00 a.m. on both days.

Applicants are not required to attend both days.
The physical performance exam is a challenging test of endurance, featuring three key events that must be completed within the specified time limits:
1,000 Yard Run and 1,000 Yard Swim: Must be completed in under 25 minutes
Run-Swim-Run: 100 yards each way, to be finished in under 3 minutes
400 Yard Rescue Board Paddle: Must be completed in under 4 minutes
Kilauea eruption paused, but likely to begin again
Before taking the physical exam, all applicants must pre-register. Registration will be held at the Ala Moana Beach Park Ocean Safety Training Center, located behind lifeguard tower 1B, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on January 24 and 25.
For those who pass the physical test, interviews will be held on February 4, 2025, at which applicants must be present to qualify.
Applicants must bring the following required documents on the day of the exam:
A current/valid driver’s license
High school diploma, GED, or proof of high school completion
Proof of completion of an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Class
Proof of completion of a Basic First Aid Class
Proof of completion of an American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Class or American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider Class
