BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — Tourism leaders want lawmakers to increase North Dakota’s investment in tourism, an industry that generated $3.3 billion from 26 million visitors in 2023. Advocates gathered at the state capital for Tourism Day, to speak with legislators about boosting the tourism marketing budget. The President & CEO at Fargo-Moorhead Convention & Visitors Bureau, Charley Johnson, said,"The budget recommends $5 million over two years, so $2.5 million dollars a year. On the other hand, South Dakota does $25 million per year. Montana does about $40 million per year. Minnesota does $15 to $20 million per year. So, we're lagging way behind our surrounding states and other states in the neighborhood." Tribal leaders celebrate accomplishments in Native tourism Leaders say more funding would help attract visitors, grow the economy, and address workforce shortages. They argue that promoting tourism has a “halo effect,” encouraging people to visit and consider moving to North Dakota. Advocates also want lawmakers to restore the Destination Development Fund, which provided grants to enhance attractions across the state. Last year, the fund received 81 applications requesting 151 million dollars, but with only 25 million dollars available, many projects went unfunded. Tourism is North Dakota’s third-largest industry, behind oil and agriculture. Leaders say with additional investment, the state could better compete with its neighbors and grow its share of the regional tourism market. Lawmakers will decide on the proposed funding increases later this session. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Today's Top Stories SIGN UP NOW
