BismarckBurleigh Public Health readies for PIT count

BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The homeless are often hidden from plain sight here in North Dakota, so it can be difficult to understand the gravity of the issue.
That's why, what's called an Unsheltered Point in Time (PIT) Count is done, showing that everybody counts — no matter where they live.
The PIT Count is mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It's meant to collect data on both sheltered and unsheltered homelessness.
This includes people living in their cars, people who are on the streets, and more.

This data then drives policy decisions, helping officials better understand the issue to tailor local services and resources to the state's needs.
Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health is doing the Bismarck-Mandan count, which is one of eight taking place across the state.
They say the count is instrumental for receiving the grants they need to help remedy homelessness.
"It really gives us an idea of what resources are needed in the community," says public health director Renae Moch. "If there's a lot of people that are unsheltered, do we need additional shelter beds in the community, or do we need to put some additional funding for addressing homelessness?"
