BAKERSFIELD, Calf. (KGET) -- A man with prior convictions for attempted murder and assault with a gun was found guilty of attacking another inmate at Kern Valley State Prison in Delano. Jonathan Pugh, 40, was found guilty last week of stabbing an inmate in the face and upper body with a makeshift knife, according to the District Attorney's Office. The victim survived. Pugh faces a 17-year sentence for the June 6, 2022, attack, which occurred in a prison dayroom. "The defendant's actions demonstrate a clear and alarming disregard for human life," District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer said in a release. "Given the violent nature of this crime and the ongoing threat he poses to public safety, it is crucial that he face the maximum prison sentence allowable under the law." Pugh was convicted of three felony charges: assault with a deadly weapon by a prisoner, assault by a prisoner with force likely to result in great bodily and being a prisoner in possession of a weapon. Sentencing is scheduled Feb. 20.
