ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Town of Greece officially has a new animal shelter. Officials held a ribbon cutting Wednesday morning. According to officials, the newly opened Precinct 2 Animal Shelter is the first of its kind, both in and around the Greece area. For years, the town operated its veterinarian and shelter services through a private vendor. In March of last year, they opted out of their lease, leaving the town unable to care for the community's stray and surrendered pets. Wednesday, Town of Greece Supervisor Bill Reilich joined leaders to open the new facility, which was designed to house over 100 dogs and over 150 cats annually. The shelter includes an outdoor play area, double sided runs, cat condos and isolated sick rooms. Reilich said the goal of the shelter is to help Greece continue to be a safe community for all furry friends. WHY ROC: Business growth around Monroe County "We understand the role that animals play in one's daily lives," Reilich began. "We want to make sure that if one gets loose or is a stray, or if one gets in trouble, that we're able to help them out the best way we can." Reilich added that the shelter cost the town roughly $1.75 million, but they anticipate receiving a grant to help cover that expense. The shelter is located in Greece at 500 Maiden Lane.
