2 arrested, found with narcotics and gun with kids in car following crash

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – Two people were arrested Wednesday after Rochester Police recovered narcotics and a handgun from the scene of a crash on Harris Street involving two small children in the back seat of the vehicle.
According to Police, Officers attempted to stop a Toyota on Avenue D for traffic law violations when the driver quickly turned onto Harris Street and smashed into a fire hydrant.
Police said 43-year-old Chevas Johnson, and 34-year-old Ashley Mitchell were quickly arrested as two children, ages 5 and 7, were found in the backseat of the vehicle.
Rochester Police said officers then found a large amount of narcotics including cocaine and fentanyl throughout the vehicle, including underneath one of the children.
Police also said they found a handgun loaded with five rounds concealed in the back seat.
The children were transported to a local hospital as a precaution until a family member could take custody.
Johnson was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon (2nd and 3rd), Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance (3rd). Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Aggravated Unlicensed Operator (2nd) along with other traffic violations.
Mitchell was also charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon (2nd), Criminal Possession of a Weapon (2nd), and Endangering the Welfare of a Child.
Both Johnson and Mitchell were transported to Monroe County Jail.
