WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- A 21-year-old man has been charged in a fatal crash that killed two 19-year-old women in 2023. The charging document indicates the crash happened as the man was allegedly racing. Ahmad Juma (Courtesy Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office) Ahmad Juma appeared before a judge Wednesday afternoon and was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and two alternative counts of the same charge. The crash happened around 2 a.m. on Nov. 15, 2023, at Pawnee and Woodlawn. The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office said two cars were westbound on Woodlawn. They did not collide, but they both went off the road. Section of West Street is closing starting Monday One of the vehicles, a Lexus GS 350, struck a utility pole and overturned, ejecting Juma and two passengers. Carol Chakra died at the scene, and Lian Awadi died at the hospital. The District Attorney's Office explained the need for alternative counts. "Cases can be charged alternatively if there are two or more theories of how the crime was committed," Dan Dillon, the DA's media coordinator, said. "Each charge can be presented to a jury, and a defendant may be convicted of more than one of the alternative charges. However, the defendant can only be sentenced for one of the alternative counts, that being the most severe offense." The judge set Juma's bond at $500,000. His next court date is Feb. 3.
