Springfield task force helps homeless population with winter resources To ensure that local firefighters can continue to do their jobs and be well equipped, state officials announced a Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant for the 2025 fiscal year that will benefit the Chicopee, Springfield and Easthampton fire departments. Through this grant, Chicopee received $14,162.68, Springfield received $35,521.67, and Easthampton received $19,000. These funds will allow the fire departments to purchase a wide variety of equipment that will help to improve the safety of their personnel. "When we secure grants for additional equipment, it is definitely a benefit for the department and our personnel," said Springfield Fire Captain Drew Piemonte. "We were able to secure over 35,000 in grants to buy extra equipment, which will be technical rescue, patient transport, emergency vehicle stabilization, and tech rescue stuff." The funding also allows these local fire departments to get some new protective gear, while also stocking up on important tools like thermal imaging cameras, portable radios, hazardous gas detectors, and personnel accountability systems. State officials say firefighters across Massachusetts face unique situations when taking on emergencies, so securing funds for local fire departments to enhance their safety and those in the community is a priority.
