Suspect indicted in Providence robbery, officer assault

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man accused of committing a violent robbery then assaulting the police officers who arrested him faced a judge on Wednesday.
The Providence County Grand Jury handed up an indictment this week charging Malick Santos with first-degree robbery and two counts of assault of a police officer, among other alleged crimes.
Santos, 26, was arraigned on the charges Wednesday and ordered held without bail. He's due back in court on Feb. 25 for a pretrial conference.
Police: Robbery suspect assaulted officers during arrest
Police allege Santos pistol-whipped someone and robbed them of their jewelry on South Water Street the night of June 2, 2024.
When police went to arrest Santos the following week at his Vicksburg Street home, he allegedly assaulted the officers, who had to use a TASER to subdue him.
Santos had a loaded 9mm pistol on him at the time, according to police, and the officers also found a second 9mm pistol in his apartment, along with drugs and distribution materials.
In addition to robbery and assault, Santos is also charged with possession of a stolen firearm, three counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, and two counts each of assault with a device similar in appearance to a firearm, possession of large-capacity magazines, and possession of a firearm while possessing with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
