PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Have you ever wondered how retired Rhode Island judge Frank Caprio became the compassionate justice his fans know him as? On Feb. 4, Caprio's new book titled "Compassion in the Court: Life-Changing Stories from America's Nicest Judge" will answer that very question. Caprio is best known for the TV show "Caught in Providence," which showcased his empathy and humor in the courtroom. His son, David, told 12 News his father has been working on the book for more than a year after being asked what led to him becoming a beloved judge. READ MORE: Judge Frank Caprio’s story of empathy and strength on the national stage The listing on Amazon says Caprio's stories in the book include: "Wisdom he gained from his immigrant parents" "Stories shared by individuals of all ages who appeared in court" "How he developed the ability to tell when someone is not telling the truth" "The power of growing up with someone who believed in him—and how he’s tried to provide the same for everyone who appeared before him" "How a person’s worth isn’t measured by the mistakes they make, but by their ability to learn from those mistakes" Caprio served as chief judge in the Providence Municipal Court from 1985 until his retirement in 2023. Last year, he completed radiation treatment for pancreatic cancer after being diagnosed in December 2023. MORE: Judge Caprio completes radiation treatment The book's publisher is BenBella Books. David Caprio said his father plans to do book signings locally and regionally, with one happening at 2 p.m. on Feb. 9 at Barrington Books. He's also set to make an appearance on ABC's "Good Morning America," as well as some podcasts, his son said. One of those interviews can be seen on a December episode of "Lawyer Stories." An Instagram post by Caprio's family celebrated milestones the book has achieved while still only being available for pre-order. The post said his book became a Barnes & Noble bestseller in one day and was number one in two categories on Amazon.
