PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence County Grand Jury has indicted three men on first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of an 18-year-old Providence man last year.
Investigators allege that 20-year-old Julien Santiago and 18-year-old Jalen Santiago, both of Providence, and 20-year-old Jose Diaz of Pawtucket were responsible for the killing of Darmani Balbuena.
Balbuena was fatally shot on his 18th birthday while standing in the driveway of his Rhode Street home on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2024.

Target 12 previously reported that cellphone data and a pair of Nike sandals left at the crime scene led detectives to identify Diaz and charge the suspects in district court.
Police said witnesses reported seeing individuals dressed in black fleeing the scene toward Borinquen Street after the shooting. Officers detained Julien and Jalen Santiago nearby in an empty lot and found a firearm, a spent shell casing, and keys matching a car that witnesses had seen circling the neighborhood hours before the shooting.
All three suspects were also reportedly involved in a previous shooting on Cranston Street in June 2024.
