OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — As cold temperatures are still here in the metro, a local thrift store is trying to help those who need warm clothes, food, and water. The store told News 4 that two homeless people died in the metro from hypothermia this year and they don't want that number to grow from the cold. "When we lose someone after trying so hard, we're just broken," said Delisa Jones, the owner of Second Chance Thrift Store. Warming stations available in Oklahoma City metro Delisa Jones is the owner of Second Chances Thrift Store and said the freezing temperatures really impact the homeless community. "When the temps are just so bad, we cannot convince them to leave a camp or their site or their belongings, that's all they have," said Jones. Jones started her ministry eight years ago to help those with no one to turn to. "I opened Second Chances as a re-entry ministry so that we could focus on men and women who are coming out of prison homelessness, addiction, human trafficking, sex trafficking, all the things re-entry," said Jones. Jones works all year round and said winter brings days that she dreads the most. Every day, she gives out warm clothes, tents, and food to those who need it. In addition to Second Chances helping the community, the Homeless Alliance is also reminding the community that their shelter saves lives. Homeless shelter operating over capacity during winter weather, donations helpful "When it's below freezing, we're not going to turn people away, that the building can hold some more folks," said Taylor Self, the Chief Communications Officer at the Homeless Alliance. Taylor Self with the Homeless Alliance said while donations have been generous this year, they tend to use more resources this time of year. "I think that a continued support through the rest of the winter will help us really finish strong and keep people safe," said Self. "We just feel like if our community could come together a little bit tighter, then we could do so much more," said Jones.
