NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) -- The cases will move forward for two of the men suspected in a robbery inside of an ODU dorm in September.
Quincy Banks and Sekai Hughley are each facing numerous charges including robbery, use of a firearm and brandishing in relation to the incident.
A judge certified those charges on Tuesday afternoon following a lengthy preliminary hearing that saw testimony from all of the victims as well as several investigating police officers. The pair appeared in the courtroom side by side with their attorneys.
Two of the victims, who are all students at ODU, testified that they thought it was a joke when they were approached by three men in a common room in the Scotland dorm building and told they were being robbed. That is, until at least one of the men lifted his shirt to reveal a 9mm handgun in his waistband, according to the testimonies in court.
The victims told the court that they were made to send CashApp transactions, with one having surrendered $2,000 through multiple payments. The men then took their phones, left the building and attempted to speed away in a red Mercedes, according to the victims.
The officer who followed that vehicle as it headed away from the scene also testified, explaining that one of the suspects bailed out of the car and jumped over a fence before he even turned on his lights to stop it.
The victims' phones and identifying information were recovered nearby with the assistance of a police K-9.
The judge's decision allows the cases to move up to circuit court.
