Snowfall causes water main breaks and frozen pipes

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – Some of the snow is thawing, thanks to the sunshine, but some pipes remain frozen.
Rooter Man CEO Roni Lavenia says you may have to wait for your pipes to thaw to determine if the issue is with the residential plumbing system or the infrastructure.
The snowmen are still standing one day after the historic snowfall, and while many were still enjoying the elements, some had their work cut out for them.

“I'd say [around] seven, 8:00 at night, we made that snowman right over there, and I didn't really notice it, but my other neighbor, his name's Nick as well, he came and he noticed the concrete sunk three to four inches, and that pipe was burst,” said Nick Meilleur, who lives on Hawthorne Place in Mid-City.
Meilleur and his neighbors have water, but the pressure is low because of the break.
They say they called the Sewerage and Water Board, and a crew responded Wednesday morning. According to a spokeswoman, repairs require an excavator, and they won't be able to deploy one until road conditions improve.
"Unfortunately, there's nothing they can do today,” said Meilleur. "So, I think the biggest question is going to be is, when will they be able to come out here and actually fix this before it does start to get really frustrating. I understand we don't have the infrastructure for this in New Orleans, but this does need to be fixed, and hopefully they can get it done in a timely manner.”
Whether you're getting help from a gadget like the Freeze Miser, or you're doing it manually, Lavenia says people should still be trickling their water furthest from the meter.
It's also important to know where your emergency shutoff is located in case your pipes become frozen.
"When you turn the valve or the knob, it turns it off. I think to the right, it's on. To the left, it's turning it off,” explained Lavenia. "That's the most important thing, because until the temperatures drop and the pipes thaw, no one knows if their lines are broken. Right now, they just may be frozen.”

Among the calls Rooter Man is receiving is water leaking from the ceiling.
"Snow gets into the attic, and then as it's melting, you may think you have a water leak, but you may actually have snow that got into the house that you're not aware of,” said Lavenia.
Rooter Man is now asking for customers' patience as crews wait for the snow to melt.
"What we can offer right now is peace of mind, and as soon as it's safe, we're going to get right on the road,” said Lavenia.
Jefferson Parish is experiencing some water main breaks as well, according to their water service interruption map. Those who live there are asked to limit non-essential water usage.
In New Orleans, customers are asked to contact the Sewerage and Water Board’s emergency line, 5-2-WATER, to report an issue.
