Doctor gives tips on personal safety during freezing conditions
Jan 22, 2025
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — With a ball of snow in hand, residents of southeast Louisiana are continuing to enjoy large amounts of snow in their area. Most say it wasn't something they had on their bucket list to start off 2025, but they aren't complaining.
"Yeah. Living out, I guess, just a childhood dream, right? Because you always dream of moments like this, and it's odd that it's in January, but, you know, very thankful to get to experience it absolutely so much," said Beau Taranto.
"I can't stay inside with this weather because the sun's out. It's awesome. The snow's, like, so fluffy. It's fun to play with it. I mean, it's just a great time," said Cam Sanders.
Another frigid night ahead
Yet that winter fun comes with risks you may not be used to.
Dr. Jeffery Elder with University Medical Center in New Orleans says getting sick in this weather could lead to a domino effect.
"Cold weather doesn't cause people to get ill. It can weaken your immune system if you're out in the cold. More importantly, with this cold, it brings everybody together," said Elder. "And if somebody is ill, they're more likely to then get somebody else sick that's around them. Cold weather doesn't cause people to get ill. It can weaken your immune system if you're out in the cold."
Elder suggests people layer up their clothing when venturing outside to build snowmen. If you begin to feel a tingling or numbness, find somewhere to warm up.
"Layering up, having multiple layers, having good socks, waterproof boots while you're in the snow and just protecting yourself from being outside in the elements. Also limit how long your outside. You can't stay outside for a very long period of time, even with all the clothes on," said Elder.

As residents enjoy what little time they have left with the historic amounts of snow, they're hoping this won't be the last time they experience it here in Louisiana.
"I wouldn't be mad if this happens again. This is really fun," said Whitney Sternfels.
"Yeah I'll take it once a year, maybe twice a year. I could do it. I could do it every once in a while," said Sanders.
Elder says along with bundling up correctly and keeping shoes and gloves dry key to reducing your risk for frostbite or hypothermia.
