Proud Boys leader and South Florida native Enrique Tarrio has landed in Miami, days after President Donald Trump pardoned all January 6 defendants. 7News cameras captured Tarrio walking out of a terminal at Miami International Airport and hugging his mother and other loved ones who were waiting for him. Tarrio began making his first public comments to the crowd of reporters who swarmed him as he walked to a parked SUV before being interrupted by a hug from a loved one. “I think I love my family,” said Tarrio. Another defendant, Gabriel Garcia, also greeted Tarrio at the airport and said they are both happy to be home. “Nothing, just glad to be home. We’re not even talking about politics, J6 or any of this. Just get back with our lives and that’s all we’re asking for,” said Garcia. During a layover at Dallas Love Field Airport en route to Miami, Tarrio spoke to reporters, criticizing the justice system’s handling of January 6 cases. “I think the miscarriage of justice that happened in these cases, regardless if somebody agrees with putting their hands on a police officer or whatnot, how the process worked out was unfair,” he said. Tarrio was released from a federal prison in Louisiana on Tuesday, hours after Trump signed a sweeping pardon to all 1,500 people charged with crimes in the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. He served 16 months of what was supposed to be a 22-year sentence. On Tuesday, following his release from prison, he spoke on “Infowars” hosted by Alex Jones about his imprisonment. “Twenty-two years is not a short sentence. That is the rest of my life,” said Tarrio on the podcast. While Tarrio was not in Washington, D.C., on that day, prosecutors said he organized an attack in an attempt to stop a peaceful of power. Tarrio said the justice system is weaponized. “I mean, we see how this system could be weaponized, and we need people like Pam Bondi, Kash Patel and the rest of Trump’s Cabinet to right all these wrongs,” said Tarrio on the podcast. He also thanked Trump and his supporters. “We went through hell, and I’m going to tell you, it was worth it,” said Tarrio on the podcast. “I had no doubt he was going to release us.” Tarrio was arrested at his family’s home in 2022. A year later, he was found guilty of multiple felonies, including seditious conspiracy. Moments upon arriving home from the airport, Tarrio spoke to 7News about what he plans to do with his freedom. “Extremely happy, extemely jubilant,” he said. “You know, I’m with my family. I just want to chill, hang out, grill with my family, just hang out with them.” He said that he knew he wasn’t going to serve the full 22-year sentence. “I kind of knew that I wasn’t going to serve the full 22 years. Not because of a pardon or anything, we had a really good case for appeal. You had jury members that shouldn’t have been sat. They had a bias, in our case specifically, there were jurors that did have a bias and they voiced those biases,” said Tarrio. In the interview with 7News, he reiterated his thanks to Trump. “Love him or hate him, he’s a person who keeps his promises. So he had said that he was going to pardon the sixers and he was going to look at cases one by one and I think that’s what they did,” said Tarrio. Trump defended his sweeping pardon in a Tuesday press conference. “People have already served a long period of time, and I made a decision to give a pardon,” said Trump. But critics said the pardons don’t sit well with them. “These are people, as you said, many of whom were convicted of or plead guilty to engaging in an act of violence. That conduct has been excused by these pardons which really is a horrible threat to the rule of law,” said Former Lead Investigator of the January 6 Committee Tim Heaphy. When asked on the podcast about his future with the Proud Boys, Tarrio did not provide a concrete answer. “We’ve made a decision not to talk publicly about what our leadership structure is, but I do have a suggestion to the mainstream media: They should stop calling me the ex-Proud Boys leader,” said Tarrio on the podcast. According to CNN, Trump is weighing whether to host some of the pardoned defendants at the White House. When asked about those plans, Tarrio said that he didn’t know anything about it, but that he would not turn down an invitation if it were extended to him.
