Overton High student brought gun to school: Police

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An Overton High School student was taken into custody after police say he brought a handgun to school Wednesday.
Police say the school officer received a tip that a student had a gun. He made contact with the student in a hallway as students were going to lunch, and asked him if he had a gun.
The student took off running. He was detained by the officer, who said he found a handgun in a crossover bag the student was carrying.

The student told police he bought the gun from someone, and brought it to school because he did not want to leave it at home with his siblings.
The student's mother made the scene, and he was taken to the Shelby County Juvenile Detention Center.
