MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- A year after the Memphis City Council wanted to remove C.J. Davis from her position, they voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve her as the permanent police chief. CJ Davis showed up to work on Wednesday no longer as interim, but instead, as the newly reinstated police chief. Those in the community we spoke with are divided on whether she has earned that title.  City Council votes to reappoint C.J. Davis as police chief, removing ‘interim’ from title We asked Gordon Crone if he felt safe with C.J. Davis as the new chief of police. He responded, "As of right now, yes." Not too long after, we found someone who opposed Crone.  "I don’t agree. I feel like she has a track record that’s not favorable for the position that she is carrying," said another person. Mixed emotions spread throughout The Bluff City with all the recent leadership changes. That includes a new interim superintendent for MSCS and a new temporary leader for the Memphis Area Transit Authority. But, one thing that’s not changing is the top brass. “I’m from Atlanta and I know the things that happened there. Why did they bring her here?" said one person. Chief CJ Davis first started the position in 2021. By January 2024, interim was added to her title after her reappointment failed.  Now, the city council says they are pleased with the 13% decrease in overall crime that happened last year. “I have noticed that crime is down," said Crone. 📡 See more breaking news, local news and weather from WREG.com for Memphis and the Mid-South. 📧 Sign up for WREG newsletters and have the latest top stories sent right to your inbox. Crone says he has lived in Memphis his whole life and has been a victim of crime numerous times.  He hopes that Chief Davis will continue moving the city upward.  "I know it takes time. I am giving her the okay. She is doing a good job. It would be nice to see her out a little bit more in the public and talking to individuals like me just out on the street or whatever, somewhere, and get our viewpoints on what could be better in the city," Crone said. We spoke exclusively with Chief C.J. Davis not long after being reappointed.  Here is what she had to say.  “The changes that we are making in the police department – we are really excited about that,” said Davis. When we reached out to Chief Davis to ask about those changes, her office said we would hear more about them in February.
