LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- Smiles, hugs and laughs filled the Henry Clay High School cafeteria on January 17 as the 2005 Blue Devils boy’s basketball team reunited for the second time in ten years. The 20th anniversary of the team’s 31-4 overall season is this year and current Henry Clay head coach Daniel Brown brought everyone together. “20 years goes by in no time,” said former assistant coach Jay Bordas, who now coaches at Bryan Station. Head Coach of the ’05 team, Kirk Chiles, blew his whistle to gather his former players and told them “I’m just as proud of you now as I was back then.” One of the players, Adam Carson says the team was like a family. “It feels like yesterday we were in the locker room,” he said. “We had a fantastic miracle season.” Nowadays, most of the players have families of their own. Carson hopes his son can do what he did after winning the 11th Region title. “We ended up going to the state tournament. It’s an experience that you can’t really explain stepping on the Rupp Arena floor,” said Carson. “We brought Henry Clay back to where it belongs.” The Blue Devils won the first round game of the Sweet Sixteen, against Shelby County, but dropped the second round matchup to Warren Central. “Still think we should’ve won the whole thing. It was a really fun run man we had a blast,” said Bordas. Ending up in the final was the cherry on top of a season that saw Henry Clay obtain the second best record in school history, but the season started with a loss at Paul Laurence Dunbar. “One thing that stands out is the 17 game winning streak we had,” said Chiles. Even though the team won like it was going out of style, the memories they made outside the lines mean the most. “All the memories aren’t really about basketball. It’s the locker room, the car rides, the joking around that’s the special part of it all,” said Bordas.
