Light snow likely Thursday; warm up starts this weekend
Jan 22, 2025
Wednesday was the second day in a row for morning lows below zero across central Indiana. The good news is that the arctic air is starting to retreat. We had sunny skies, and gusty southwest winds brought milder air, and afternoon high temperatures were near 20°. That's an improvement after not making it out of the single digits Tuesday afternoon.
Clouds will increase overnight as a warm front approaches. The extra cloud cover and southwesterly winds will keep temperatures from dropping as far as tonight. We only fall to the mid teens by Thursday morning. A few flurries and isolated light snow will develop overnight with additional scattered, light snow showers returning Thursday afternoon. This will not be a big snow maker, but a dusting to a few tenths of an inch will be possible.
Another cold front passes Friday but the temperature change won't be as severe as what we experienced early in the week. Friday will be a bit cooler. Lows will be in the single-digits and highs will be near 20°.This is quickly followed by a new warmup that will take temperatures above freezing over the weekend.
The milder weather pattern will extend into next week with highs in the mid-30s on Monday. The warm up will continue through Tuesday and Wednesday. Expect sunny skies with highs in the 40s. The dry, warmer weather will finally melt the snow that has blanketed central Indiana since January 5th.
Indianapolis snowfall is above average for the month and for the season.
January has been a very cold month.
Thursday will be a cloudy day with scattered flurries and snow showers.
Temperatures will not be as cold on Thursday.
A warmer weather pattern moves in this weekend and extends into next week.
