DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP0 -- On snowy and cold days, it’s easy to forget about those who rely on others to get by. But in Davidson County, Meals on Wheels is ensuring seniors aren’t forgotten by delivering food and vital wellness checks. The program serves around 350 seniors daily across 23 delivery routes with the help of more than 400 volunteers. It even offers options for seniors with special dietary needs, including diabetic, renal and pureed meals. “Meals on Wheels is so much more than a meal,” Nutrition Program Manager for Davidson County Senior Services Ron Bellini said. “It’s also a daily well-being check. Volunteers make sure our seniors are safe, and if they find someone in crisis, we follow up immediately.” One of those seniors is 85-year-old Helen Plummer, who has spent her entire life in Thomasville in the house she still calls home. She looks forward to seeing her Meals on Wheels delivery driver Geoff Brown daily. “They come in and spend a little time with me because people don’t go down this dirt road much,” Plummer said. For Brown, who moved to North Carolina from New England three years ago to semi-retire, volunteering is about giving back and connecting with others. “It’s fun to be around the older folks,” Brown said. “I always think that could be me one day or that could be my mother.” For Plummer, Meals on Wheels has come full circle. Decades ago, she volunteered with the program, delivering meals and companionship to her neighbors. “At the time, you might not have seen what you’ve done, but it made an effect on people’s lives,” Plummer said. With more than 400 volunteers, Davidson County’s Meals on Wheels program runs smoothly, but the need is growing. Currently, 117 seniors are on the waitlist, and more volunteers are needed.
