New school zones added in Colorado Springs

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — Four more school zones have been installed across Colorado Springs.
The city hopes to slow down traffic and keep students safer in light of a previous tragedy outside a school. A student hit by a car and killed at Doherty High School in 2023 was the catalyst for a more concerted effort to implement more school zones across the community, according to the city's Traffic Engineer.Drivers are now being warned, as traffic fines double in the new school zones at Rampart High School, Mitchell High School, Jenkins Middle School, and Carmel Community School.
The principal at Rampart said she's grateful for the change, and added that she's already seeing the benefits. "So every morning I do kind of traffic duty in the front of school, right in our own parking lots. As I was walking out, there was a car driving very quickly down Lexington and immediately got to the flashing lights and slowed down," said Meghan Sanders, the Principal/Administrator at Rampart High School. "So that was positive to see. That was the first time I saw the flashing lights out yesterday morning, too. So it was nice when I was driving in. Then to see (the school zone) make an impact on (the driver), was awesome to see for our kids. "
The city previously identified 21 schools that need school zones. Last year, they added five new ones. The city's Traffic Engineer anticipates they will add four or five more school zones by the end of this year. They hope to finish off the list of the 21 schools that need school zones in 2026.
