Pat Surtain II named Defensive Player of the Year by football writers
Jan 22, 2025
DENVER (KDVR) — The Denver Broncos had a redeeming season this year after having not made the playoffs since 2015 and uncertainty heading into the season while being led by a rookie quarterback.
It would quickly become apparent that the team was here to play and a successful season followed.

Countless Broncos players picked up awards during the regular season as the team made it back to the playoffs. Plenty of star performers helped forge the path and one integral player was cornerback Pat Surtain II.
Surtain enhanced his reputation as a stalwart defender this season and by doing so earned himself the Pro Football Writers of America's Defensive Player of the Year award for the 2024 regular season.
Only in his fourth season in the NFL, Surtain has already solidified himself as an opposition offense's worst nightmare. He was named the NFL's AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 5 and the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for November.
During 16 regular season starts, Surtain posted statistics including:
45 total tackles (34 solo)
Four interceptions for 132 return yards and a touchdown return
11 passes defended
One forced fumble and one fumble recovery
306 receiving yards allowed (the lowest by any cornerback with at least 375 coverage snaps)
59.1 passer rating when targeted (second lowest among cornerbacks)
Held receivers to only 66 yards after the catch (second lowest among cornerbacks with at least 375 coverage snaps)
100 yard interception for a touchdown (second longest in franchise history)
He is the first Bronco to pick up the PFWA Defensive Player of the Year award since it was introduced in 1992. Surtain was also named to their 2024 All-NFL team and 2024 All-AFC Team.

Surtain picked up one of the major awards alongside Baltimore Ravens quarterback, Lamar Jackson (Most Valuable Player) and Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley (Offensive Player of the Year).
The NFL will announce its award winners on Feb. 6. Surtain currently is listed as the favorite to win the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award at -588 odds, according to ESPN Bet. He is the only player with minus-money odds.
