Jan 22, 2025
Community members can see a preview of Baltimore’s “Inviting Light” public art project at the SNF Parkway Theatre on Feb. 7.The project is one of the winning projects of the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Public Art Challenge. The preview is an opportunity for all those involved with the “Inviting Light” project to discuss how it came together and what they are hoping to accomplish with the installation. The goal of the project is to transform the Station North Arts District with five striking, unique, site-specific light-filled public art installations. The hope is also to inspire a series of dynamic community events and arts programming this year.
At the preview event, Mayor Brandon Scott will address those gathered, as will visual artist Derrick Adams, representatives from Bloomberg Philanthropies, and more. Attendees will also discover what is ahead for the Station North Arts District in 2025.“Inviting Light” is facilitated by Central Baltimore Partnership with the Mayor’s Office and Senior Advisor for Arts & Culture and the Neighborhood Design Center. Curated by Baltimore artist Derrick Adams, the project received additional curatorial support from Jose Ruiz.Consisting of five distinct artistic light installations, “Inviting Light” will enhance the nighttime environment and help inspire and speed the revival of Station North. The project does more than add beauty and art to the Station North Arts District; it addresses the long-standing community concern about poor quality and lack of lighting in the area. This deficiency posed a significant challenge to cultural activity, street life, and investment for area residents and businesses. “Inviting Light” takes an artistic approach to an infrastructure problem using a community approach that brought local artists, businesses, and politicians together.
“Light supports our experience in public spaces in obvious ways, like lighting our way, but also some less obvious ways — it helps us keep time, it serves as a guidepost, it creates a sense of place,” reads the press release announcing the event. The preview takes place on Friday, Feb. 7, 2025. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the program begins at 6 p.m. SNF Parkway Theatre is located at 5 W. North Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland. The event is free and open to the public, though seating is available on a first come, first served basis. Registration is required to reserve a spot.
