The Willoughby-Eastlake School of Innovation in Willoughby Hills was recently ranked number five among Ohio middle schools and number 12 in Ohio elementary schools by U.S. News and World Report. Rankings are based on student performance and how well they are prepared for high school. Willoughby-Eastlake Schools prioritizes customized learning, superintendent says "We are incredibly proud of the School of Innovation for being recognized as the number five middle school and number 12 elementary school in Ohio," said Willoughby-Eastlake Schools Superintendent Patrick Ward. "This achievement reflects the hard work, dedication and creativity our students, teachers and staff, as well as the strong support from our families and communities." Willoughby-Eastlake strives to provide innovative educational opportunities that prepare students for the future, Ward said, and "this recognition is a testament to the success of that mission." The School of Innovation's student population is currently 434 and serves grades three through eight. According to the U.S. News and World Report, 90% of students scored at or above the proficient level for math and 92% scored at or above that level for reading. Additionally, the school's minority student enrollment is 20%. The student-teacher ratio is 16:1. The student population is made up of 40% female students and 60% male students, as well as enrolls 19% economically disadvantaged students. The school also currently has 27 equivalent full-time teachers and one full-time school counselor, according to U.S. News. According to the school district, there are 75 students per grade level. The school is STEM-focused (science, technology, engineering, math) with an emphasis on problem-based learning, design thinking and collaboration. The school also supports creativity, innovation and analytical thinking. The school fosters socially responsible leaders and promotes self-direction and lifelong learning, according to the school district. "This recognition highlights the passion, curiosity and hard work that our students bring to learning every day, as well as the dedication and creativity of our teachers and staff." The school is grateful to families and the Willoughby-Eastlake community for their unwavering support, Bonick said. "Together, we are proving that innovation education truly prepares students to excel and thrive," he said. The school was also recently recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
