Big changes are coming to Gage Park, what to know
Jan 22, 2025
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Topeka's Gage Park may look a lot different by the end of 2025 with the addition of some new playground pieces and possibly an "extremely unique" new place for kids and adults to have fun together.
Gage Park is due to get some much-needed attention to its "Playland" area this year with the addition and removal of some of its playground pieces. This includes the possible installation of a "Sky Trail" which would give families a new place to have together.
Shawnee County commissioners are set to meet on Thursday, Jan. 23 to discuss the execution of a contract with RCI Adventure Products that has a price tag set at $1,280,000. If commissioners approve the contract, it would allow for the installation of the Sky Trail at the park with funding coming from the Gage Park Improvement Authority funds.

27 News reached out to Shawnee County Parks and Recreation (SCP+R) Director Tim Laurent to learn more about what this project would look like if implemented and what other changes are coming to Gage Park this year. He said the new Sky Trail would run the length of Playland, be about 15 feet in the air and wind its way through the tree canopy in the park.
"We think it would be a great addition to Playland in Gage Park and we're excited about it," Laurent said.
Laurent said the Sky Trail has been a topic of discussion for about a year now and is waiting for the final approval from county commissioners. Public feedback gathered during previous talks on the Sky Trail have been "overwhelmingly positive."
"We think this would be the cornerstone for the area," Laurent said. "You would see this as you drove up. We think it would be very popular with kids. Adults as well. It's really something that would be for the whole family."

This new addition is part of a general revamping process for the Playland area which already includes the approved removal and replacement of many playground pieces. Laurent said the vast majority of the playground pieces in Playland are due to be removed with some debate still ongoing for a couple pieces that may be moved to new locations.
"From our perspective, Gage Park is a jewel of Shawnee County," Laurent said. "We have so many kids and families going through that park on an annual basis. We've known for some time the playground equipment in that area is nearing the end of its useful life."
Laurent said many of the Playland pieces are worn out after experiencing daily use for years on end. The upcoming removal and replacement process in Playland will not include any of the unique pieces located in the nearby "Animaland."

People can expect to see construction work happening in parts of Playland this coming spring as old playground pieces are taken out and the new ones are installed. The new additions include a low-to-the-ground three-bay zipline, a climbing apparatus and a swing set. Some artificial turf is going in as well below the new ziplines.
Laurent said people can still expect to go to the park while this work is happening as only specific areas will be shut down at a time for the construction. He said the new Sky Trail would be installed around the same time if it is approved as is this week.
"I think it would be a great improvement for the park," Laurent said. "It will be extremely unique for the area to have something of this size."
When 27 News asked about what the new Sky Trail would look like, Laurent said it will consist of multiple towers in the air that connect with one another via rope bridges. Current plans include different points of entry for children to climb into the tower complex and slides for a fast way back to the bottom.
