SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — A rare winter storm is sweeping across the south, and Savannah is experiencing winter weather conditions for the first time in almost a decade. Freezing temps are gripping the region in the Coastal Empire, and this storm is already putting its name in the history books. With the snow and ice causing disruptions across Georgia's coast here and beyond. Both governors in Georgia and South Carolina have declared emergencies. Both states have seen many school closures as a result of the weather. The subfreezing temperatures are also raising concerns about road conditions, exposed plumbing, and sensitive vegetation and plants. While this region does have around 14 snowplows and have been brining the roads in advance since Sunday, keep in mind the roads are still slippery and to be very cautious if you must leave for work today. Make sure to have an emergency kit in your car with blankets, and extra gas in your tank also for the extra slow drive to your destination. On top of that, make sure you're careful on bridges and ramps. That is where black ice can easily form, which is hard to spot.
