Bitter mornings but mostly milder days ahead
Jan 22, 2025
NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Low winds chills for many, especially around the northern-mountain community areas from the San Juan Mountains to the Enchanted Circle, are once again occurring, although not as bad as yesterday, with near-record-low air temperatures on either side of zero degrees for a few areas, while some areas to the east are above freezing to start with gusty westerly winds, but most other areas are ranging from the upper single digits to the lower 20s. Low cold wind-chill values of below zero degrees have or are still occurring for some with it feeling as low as around -20 degrees in the far-northern mountain valleys, but with the drier air-mass ahead, temperatures will slowly rebound temporarily with stronger winds.
With very clear skies and dry air on the backside of the winter storm that impacted the Gulf Coast, very cold air is still present along many of the valleys floors, and while stronger westerly winds in the Northeast Highlands are providing the warmer effect down the eastern slopes of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, that same wind is making it feel colder out there.

Big temperatures swings from around 25 degrees to almost 50 degrees will occur with modifying temperatures that will slowly start to occur this afternoon in the southern communities, but it will be a colder afternoon in northern to eastern areas as the winds switch from the northeast, alluding to a backdoor front in the East Plains, then coming through the rest of the region overnight. From the morning school commute throughout the afternoon, temperatures will mostly reach into the upper 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s from north-northwest to south-southeast with southwesterly winds switching to from the northwest this afternoon then to from the north-northeast tonight with patchy blowing snow, some blowing dust, as well as the elevated fire threat.
Light snow with chilly sprinkle activity will periodically occur in the far-northern mountain communities later today with the front, as well as a few more rounds of precipitation throughout the weekend into next week, with a still sharp pressure gradient between the building high pressure system to the west to the cold air-mass to the east, igniting the stronger downsloping westerly winds along the east-sloped highland areas especially not only today, but occasionally this weekend as well. However, most central-to-southern areas will be very dry as despite a slight cooldown tomorrow after a milder day today, temperatures will mostly be on the rise ahead as clouds will pass on through.
