PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) warned residents Wednesday about a text scam targeting E-ZPass customers, claiming they have an unpaid toll.
The fraudulent texts say recipients owe money "from your recent trip on the Rhode Island toll road." To avoid additional fees, the messages instruct users to click a link and settle the "outstanding balance."
Below is an example of the scam message:
RITBA is advising that these are "smishing" messages designed to deceive users into visiting a fraudulent website.
Officials urge customers to only use the official RITBA E-ZPass website to securely check their accounts. Those who are not E-ZPass users typically receive invoices through the mail.
Anyone who receives such a text is encouraged to report it to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center or forward the message to 7726 (SPAM).
