Hospital emergency rooms and ambulances continued to operate Tuesday even as temperatures dropped and South Louisiana was blanketed with the most snow it has seen in decades. Two of the largest health care systems in the state, Ochsner Health and Francisan Ministries of Our Lady, said all of their emergency rooms were open Tuesday and expected to remain so throughout the extreme cold snap. Both providers have closed their offices for routine, in-person medical appointments Tuesday and Wednesday however. Ochsner has also shuttered its urgent care centers throughout South Louisiana both days. Acadian Ambulance Service, which provides emergency services and transportation in 39 Louisiana parishes, was “100% operational” Tuesday as the snow was falling, spokesman Randall Mann said. Its ambulances and other medical vehicles did have to move more slowly, however, because of slick roads and closed bridges and interstates. Acadian had to take alternate routes due to the closures, Mann said. The company was going to reassess whether Acadian ambulances should continue to operate fully throughout the night, as temperatures were expected to drop and the roads might become more dangerous. The Louisiana Department of Health said no patients have had to be removed from a hospital as a result of the cold or snow. A few patients were transferred between nursing homes because of a “heating pump issue” in northwest Louisiana, said Emma Herrock, the agency’s spokeswoman.
