Bitter cold temperatures grip the region
Jan 22, 2025
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Bundle up this morning as bitterly cold, Arctic air dominates central and eastern Kentucky. Wind chills have plummeted well below zero, with actual temperatures starting the day below zero in most locations. Even with some afternoon sunshine, highs today will struggle to climb into the low to mid-20s.
Arctic Chill Persists Today
High pressure anchored over the region continues to deliver clear skies and frigid air. As temperatures attempt to rebound this afternoon, a light southerly breeze will develop. While this wind shift offers slightly warmer air, it will also reinforce the cold wind chill.
Tonight, expect partly cloudy skies as the high pressure shifts eastward. Overnight lows will settle in the teens, but wind chills will remain lower due to the persistent breeze.
Light Snow Possible Thursday Night
Attention then shifts to a weak clipper system arriving late Thursday into Friday. This system will bring an increase in clouds by Thursday evening, followed by scattered snow showers or flurries during the overnight hours. While accumulations are not expected to be significant, some slick spots could develop on untreated roads, especially north of I-64.
By Friday morning, flurries will linger in spots before drier air returns for the afternoon. Highs Friday will remain below freezing, with temperatures only reaching the mid to upper 20s.
Slight Weekend Warm-Up, Possible Late Weekend System
Saturday brings a much-needed break from the bitter cold. Highs will climb into the low to mid-40s under sunny skies, offering a brief reprieve.
Looking ahead to Sunday and Monday, model uncertainty remains regarding a potential system affecting the region. Depending on how the system evolves, central and eastern Kentucky could see a mix of rain and snow. Northern areas are more likely to see snow, while southern counties may experience rain or a wintry mix. Confidence in the exact details is still low, so stay tuned to future updates.
