INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- The Independence Fire Department and other area departments are fighting a massive fire at an apartment near 291 Highway and East 39th Street. According to the Kansas City Fire Department, crews responded to a fire at Independence Ridge apartments around 6:00 a.m. Wednesday. View the latest headlines from Kansas City, Missouri, and Kansas at fox4kc.com Eric Michael from the Independence Fire Department said the fire started in a unit kitchen from an unattended pan on the stove. The unit was on the third floor. The apartments are located behind the Independence Commons Shopping Center. Michael said at this time there are no reported injuries and no one is reported missing, but the search is not complete. The fire was under control around 7:10 a.m., according to IFD. Roads to the east of the apartment are closed. Make sure to avoid the area if possible. This is a developing story, FOX4 will update this story as more details are available.
