FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) - The 19-year-old man who allegedly set fire to a Congressman's office because the Congressman voted 'Yes' to require the popular app 'TikTok' to be sold appeared in court on Wednesday. Caiden Sage Stachowicz was arrested on Saturday, January 19 on charges stemming from an early morning fire at U.S. Congressman Glenn Grothman's District Office in Fond du Lac. Sheriff’s Office: Strip club fire in Wisconsin ruled as arson, one man arrested Stachowicz was charged with the following in court on Wednesday with potential punishments upon a conviction for each added in bold: Arson - No more than $100,000 in fines and/or up to 40 years in prison if convicted Terrorist Threats - Up to $10,000 in fines and/or up to three years and six months in prison if convicted Attempted Burglary - Up to $12,500 in fines and/or up to six years and three months in prison if convicted Criminal Property Damage - No more than $10,000 in fines and/or up to nine months in prison if convicted A cash bond was set at $500,000 with the preliminary hearing set for January 30 at 2 p.m. Caiden Sage Stachowicz - Fond du Lac County District Attorney's Office "We are grateful for the quick actions of the Fond du Lac Police and Fire Departments that ensured nobody was injured in this attack and prevented more significant property damage," Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney said in the release. The incident is under investigation as District Attorney Toney also emphasized that incidents like this will be taken seriously. "We will continue to aggressively prosecute anyone that attempts to intimidate government officials from performing their lawful duties, regardless of whether we agree with the government action," Toney said in the release. The criminal complaint said that Stachowicz initially told an officer that he set the fire because he 'doesn't like Representative Glenn Gorthman' and that he went to a Menasha Kwik Trip to buy gas and matches before driving to Fond du Lac in search of the Congressman's Office. Stachowicz said he wanted to set the office on fire because TikTok was being shut down by the U.S. government, and Congressman Grothman voted in favor of it, according to the criminal complaint. 31-year-old Shawano County man arrested following 13 mile police pursuit Stachowicz added that he believed the shutdown was against his constitutional rights, and that while he has done peaceful protests before, peace was no longer an option.
