(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The Pueblo County Sheriff's Office assisted the Pueblo West Fire Department on Tuesday, Jan. 21, to rescue a woman and her dog who had fallen through ice at a pond.
At around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, deputies with PCSO and firefighters with Pueblo West Fire Department responded to Cattail Crossing Pond located at 253 South McCulloch Boulevard, near Highway 50, after a woman had fallen through ice attempting to save her dog.
When deputies arrived, the 63-year-old woman was in the water but was hanging onto a section of ice. Pueblo West firefighters were able to get the woman and put a rescue rope around her and firefighters along with a deputy pulled her to safety.
The woman told deputies that she was trying to save her dog, who had gone out into the pond chasing geese and fell through the ice. The dog was safely rescued and the woman was taken to the hospital as a precaution due to extreme cold temperatures.
"The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office warns the public to be cautious about going out on ice as it can be unpredictable and unstable," PCSO said. "The surface may appear solid, but underlying layers could be compromised and pose a risk for anyone walking on the ice."
PCSO advises individuals to put pets on a leash to prevent them from wandering out onto the ice if walking your pet near water. If your pet falls through the ice or if you see someone fall through the ice, do not rush to help them as you may fall through as well. Call 911 and if you have access to a rope or flotation device, try to throw it out and assist them from the shore until help arrives.
If you fall through the ice, do not panic. Try to remain calm and reserve your energy. If you can, get your arms onto the ice and kick your feet to help lift you onto the ice and then roll to safety.
