Which Ohio State players from the titlewinning roster are returning
Jan 22, 2025
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Ohio State is planning to continue celebrating its national championship this week, but that hasn't stopped others from thinking about next season.
Ohio State will try to accomplish something only one other team has in the playoff era: win back-to-back national championships. Oddsmakers already have the Buckeyes pinned as the title favorites in 2025 and will start next season on Aug. 30 by playing Texas, the team with the second-best title odds, in a Cotton Bowl rematch at Ohio Stadium.

The roster will go through some serious changes with many key contributors to the 2024 championship leaving. However, some of the top stars will be back and will be joined by transfers and freshmen looking to make an impact.
Who is leaving for the NFL draft?
Upperclassmen instrumental in winning the title will walk into the NFL as champions.
Quarterback Will Howard, running back TreVeyon Henderson, and receiver Emeka Egbuka, Ohio State's all-time leader in receptions, will leave. Egbuka is projected to be the highest selection among those three, but he won't be the only Buckeye taken early in the draft.
Offensive lineman Josh Simmons, who suffered a season-ending injury in October, is also projected to be a high pick. Starting center Seth McLaughlin, who missed the playoff, and tackle Josh Fryar are among the other offensive linemen leaving as well.
What’s the history behind Ohio State’s buckeye helmet stickers?
The biggest question on offense will be running back Quinshon Judkins. The Mississippi transfer left a tremendous last impression for NFL scouts with his three-touchdown performance Monday against Notre Dame. He is eligible to return for his senior season but could decide to try his hand in the NFL.
Defensively, most starters will be gone. Jack Sawyer, Tyleik Williams, J.T. Tuimoloau, Cody Simon, Denzel Burke, Lathan Ransom, and Jordan Hancock all are likely NFL draft selections. Among the starters to wait and see include linebacker Sonny Styles and cornerback Davison Igbinosun, who would be seniors next season.
Who is coming back for 2025?
The biggest question for 2025 will be the same one Buckeyes fans have had going into the last two seasons: Who will be the quarterback? Incoming sophomore Julian Sayin is favored to take the job, but Ohio State could go back to the portal as it did with Howard.
The Buckeyes will again have one of the best sets of receivers and will be led by Jeremiah Smith. The freshman scored five touchdowns in Ohio State's title run and will likely be a Heisman Trophy contender as a sophomore. Carnell Tate and Brandon Inniss will start with Smith.
How much Ohio State’s Ryan Day made for winning national championship
The offensive line and defense will be younger units. Carson Hinzman, Luke Montgomery and Tegra Tshabola will lead the offensive line, and safety Caleb Downs will be arguably the best defensive player in college football for his junior season. Other notable players returning include running back James Peoples and linebacker C.J. Hicks.
Incoming transfers and freshmen
The Buckeyes have already reloaded with multiple transfers and star recruits coming.
Former West Virginia running back C.J. Donaldson, Purdue tight end Max Klare and Minnesota offensive tackle Phillip Daniels will join the offense.
The 2025 freshman class is one of the best in the country and could make an immediate impact. Five-star cornerback Devin Sanchez slots in as a key player and, with Downs, could create a lockdown secondary. Defensive end Zion Grady looks likely to get many snaps, while Bellefontaine, Ohio, native Tavien St. Clair could be called upon to play quarterback.
