These temperatures can be dangerous for children waiting outside for the bus. Exposed skin is especially at risk for frostbite, and they should be wearing their gloves, hats, scarves, and heavy jackets to protect themselves against the cold.
Some symptoms of frostbite include redness, stinging, burning, or even a prickling sensation followed by numbness. You'll want to seek medical attention immediately if your feeling does not return or if the skin begins to turn gray.
Also know that cars can be harder to start in the extreme cold, so plan ahead. According to AAA, during cold weather, your vehicle may require twice the amount of current than normal to get the engine to start. Make sure you have enough gas, and know your car is working harder to stay warm.
Remember, this type of weather is dangerous for pets as well. Pets should be kept inside during extreme cold weather, except for short periods of time as needed. It only takes minutes to get frostbite, both in humans and animals, so follow these guidelines to stay warm, and protect yourself.
