Correctional officers hospitalized after apparent fire at ACI

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — An investigation is underway after someone allegedly tampered with an electrical outlet in a cell at the Adult Correctional Institutions (ACI) Tuesday evening.
R.I. Department of Corrections spokesperson J.R. Ventura said around 8 p.m., inmates were moved temporarily from John J. Moran Medium Security Facility out of an abundance of caution.
An inmate was trying to light the drug K2 in his cell using an electrical outlet causing smoke, which triggered an alarm, according to Richard Ferruccio, head of the correctional officers union.
Ventura said four correctional officers were brought to the hospital to be checked out for exposure to the chemicals.
No other injuries were reported.
