Mystery logistics firm adding 525 jobs in line for county cash

An unidentified transportation and logistics company whose description matches Ryder Systems Inc. is poised to get $7.5 million in incentives to create a $450 million headquarters in unincorporated Miami-Dade County and add 525 more workers over seven years.
The company already employs 1,100 in Miami-Dade, according to the application submitted by the Beacon Council for a company labeled “Project Hometown.” Ryder, founded in the county in 1933, is now headquartered in leased Coral Gables offices.
The applicant would “consolidate its various national operations into a global headquarters in a sprawling 550,000-square-foot campus” yet to be selected, says the application, which this week goes to county commissioners without prior committee airing.
A memo from Mayor Daniella Levine Cava recommends approval of the funding to be disbursed over 10 years “contingent upon verification of job creation, capital investment, and tax payments,” estimated at $17.3 million for the property over 10 years.
The new jobs, at an annual average pay of $135,000 plus $10,000 benefits, would consolidate offices now spread across the nation, the memo says.
Ryder, a leader in supply chain, dedicated transportation and fleet management, in 2023 sold its 18-year, 248,989-square-foot, 16.8-acre headquarters at 11690 NW 105th St. for $42.1 million, saying it needed much less office space post-pandemic as many of its 800 office employees there worked remotely and it was time to downsize.
Two months later, Ryder announced a long-term lease of two floors in the Colonnade office tower at 2333 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables, noting that most of its nearly 50,000-person workforce was spread around the nation. The company noted that it had more than 760 maintenance shops and 300 warehouses.
Incentives for Project Hometown come from the county’s Targeted Jobs Incentive Fund, geared to grow businesses and jobs.
