MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Shouts of "recall" against Memphis-Shelby County School board members could be heard from the public after a majority of them voted to fire Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins. In a 6 to 3 vote, the school board terminated her contract on Tuesday night during a contentious meeting that went on for hours. Things got heated during the meeting when attorney Robert Spence, who was hired by the board chair Joyce Dorse Coleman, presented a report on his investigation into the charges made against the superintendent. He said the charges, including one that she misled the board and accepted donations without the board's knowledge, were all true. School board votes to terminate Superintendent Feagins’ contract "Dr. Feagins violated her employment contract no less than eight times and deviated from board policy on at least nine separate occasions," Spence said during the meeting. Board member Michelle McKissack openly took exception to the delivery of Spence's remarks. "Chair, this is not a courtroom. And the board hired attorney is acting like he is in a courtroom," McKissack said. "He was instructed to read the executive summary." In the end, McKissack, Amber Huett-Garcia and Tamarques Porter were the only board members who supported Dr. Feagins. "I actually voted in favor to give her a chance," Porter said. "I believe in due process. I believe in fairness. We have made some mistakes on both sides of the aisle." MSCS board members express confidence in interim superintendent Following the meeting, McKissack spoke with WREG and said she'd spoken with State Representative Mark White earlier in the day about the state taking over the school board. Ultimately, the board voted to appoint Dr. Roderick Richmond as the interim superintendent. Board Chair Coleman said she had spoken with former Superintendent Dr. Willie Herenton and claimed he would be willing to help the board moving forward. In the meantime, Dr. Feagins indicated that she would be letting her attorney speak for her in the future.
