Maryland Attorney General: Trump's executive order on transgender rights 'threatens people's lives'
Jan 21, 2025
MARYLAND (DC News Now) -- As part of the slew of executive orders he signed on his first day in office, President Donald Trump rolled back projections for transgender people, and said the U.S. would only recognize two sexes, rejecting their gender identities.
Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown released a statement on Tuesday, denouncing the order.
"Make no mistake: this Executive Order threatens people's lives," Brown wrote, in part.
The executive order declares that the federal government only recognizes two sexes: male and female, defined based on whether people are born with eggs or sperm, rather than their chromosomes, as explained by the Associated Press.
"'Female' means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the large reproductive cell. 'Male' means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex that produces the small reproductive cell," the order stated.

"This is a decision that ignores the humanity and reality of transgender Americans across our State and nation," Brown also stated.
The mandate also limits federal funding for transition health services, barring federal agencies from allocating funds to promote gender ideology.
Federal prisons and shelters are also now required to segregate incarcerated people, sexual assault survivors and migrants by their sex, not their gender identities.
This means transgender women would be housed with men in federal prisons, explained Orion Rummler and Kate Sosin in an article for The 19th.
"The Maryland Office of the Attorney General will protect all Marylanders – especially members of marginalized communities - and wants transgender residents of our State to know that they belong, they matter, and our Office will fight for their rights and safety," Brown's statement concluded.
