Police: Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force detectives shoot man near Casa Bonita in Lakewood

LAKEWOOD, Colo. The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is investigating after detectives with the Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force (CMATT) shot a man near Casa Bonita Tuesday evening. According to the Lakewood Police Department, the incident began around 12:10 p.m. Tuesday when officers tried to pull over a driver who was eluding police. The driver got away and nearly struck two officers, according to Lakewood PD. The driver reportedly had a gun in his lap. Officers spotted the vehicle around 3:45 p.m. Lakewood PD decided to reach out to the Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force (CMATT) for help with the arrest. CMATT is comprised of officers from across the Denver metro area. CMATT detectives spotted the driver outside of his car at an apartment in the 1600 block of Pierce Street near Casa Bonita. Lakewood police said detectives tried to stop him, but he ran off with a gun in his hand. According to Lakewood PD, a detective from the Denver Police Department and a detective from the Golden Police Department shot at the man, striking him. The man was taken to the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, according to Lakewood police. No officers were injured in the shooting. Lakewood PD will investigate the eluding incidents that led up to the shooting, while the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) will investigate the police shooting.
