Richmond uncle used boy, 6, to hide gun from police

(KRON) -- A Richmond man used his 6-year-old nephew to hide a loaded gun inside of the boy's pants, federal prosecutors said.
The uncle, 30-year-old Darneko Yates, is a convicted felon, prosecutors said. The gun incident happened on August 27, 2023 in San Pablo. At the time, Yates was on parole following three felony convictions for carjacking, solicitation to commit murder, and possessing a loaded firearm.
San Pablo Police Department officers attempted to pull Yates' vehicle over, but he continued driving for several blocks with his young nephew and niece in the backseat. He eventually parked in front of his relative's house.
"When Yates’s six-year-old nephew got out of the car, Yates urged the child to go inside the house. The child moved slowly and kept his back to the officers. When officers looked at the front of the child, they saw an object tucked into the front of his pants," the U.S. Attorney Northern District of California wrote.
Officers found a loaded Glock firearm inside the boy's pants, prosecutors said. The gun had a machinegun conversion device that which allows a shooter to fire an endless stream of bullets with one pull of the trigger, prosecutors said.
“Using a child to conceal a loaded, fully automatic firearm shows an alarming disregard for their safety and well-being,” said FBI Special Agent Dan Costin.
While Yates was still inside his vehicle, he allegedly sent text messages telling someone inside the house to get the boy away from the car before officers could search it because his nephew had the gun.

U.S. Attorney Ismail Ramsey said Yates endangered his nephew. "Thanks to the careful work of the officers on the scene, this did not turn into a tragedy," Ramsey said.
Following a 1-day trial this week, a federal judge found Yates guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He will face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison when he is sentenced on April 28.
