WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Freezing temperatures resulted in record-breaking temperatures in Wichita and Salina on Tuesday. The drop in temperature also contributed to a spike in business for local plumbers. A local plumber said they can get hundreds of calls this week. He said the main problem is frozen waterlines under the home, meaning no water throughout the house.  Gus Bloyer, a journeyman for Benjamin Franklin, said they got under the house, in the crawl space, using heat guns, to thaw out the frozen pipe. He said the electrical heat tape often becomes disconnected or needs to be replaced, so the added protection around the pipe fails.  The plumbing team said this cold weather is keeping them busy.  "Once the waterlines start to thaw out, that's when people start noticing that their waterline has frozen burst. And they typically call us out with a flooded crawl space or an active water leak that we'll come out and address on a frozen burst waterline," said Bloyer. He said they will receive more pipe burst calls later this week when those pipes begin to unfreeze.  The plumbing company recommends homeowners check their heat tape works yearly and unplug cables during non-winter seasons.
