NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - 22News is Working For You on how to protect yourself from frostbite during this arctic blast across our region. We spoke with a doctor from Cooley Dickinson Health Care who says some symptoms of frostbite include redness, stinging, burning, or even a prickling sensation followed by numbness. Avoid rubbing frostbitten skin and do not submerge the affected area directly into hot water.Instead, use warm water or a warm washcloth. You'll want to seek medical attention immediately if the sensation does not return or if the skin begins to turn gray. Dr. Sundeep Shukla told 22News, "People of extreme age, really young children or people over the age of 65, are more at risk. Especially people with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure, or other medical comorbidities that may make symptoms worse, they need to be cared for." Medical experts say to stay out of the cold for as long as you can. If you must go outside, protect your body with multiple layers and make sure snow cannot get inside your boots or clothing.
