Belchertown updates plan to address natural disasters
Jan 21, 2025
BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WWLP) - Belchertown residents got to provide their input Tuesday night on what changes should be made to the town's natural hazards mitigation plan.
This plan is being completed by the Town with assistance from the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission. This update is done every 5 years, to identify and address potential hazards before they occur.
It will outline a set of actions that can be taken to reduce losses of property and life due to natural disasters like floods, winter storms, wildfires, droughts, and extreme heat events.
"We want to make sure that where we're prepared and if we can reduce or even eliminate some hazards from that, we can try to predict ahead of time of certain areas and town that might be affected more so than not.," says Belchertown Fire Chief John Ingram.
This plan will continue to make the town eligible for hazard mitigation assistance grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
