NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Dominion Energy says it will staff crews around the clock as the latest winter storm moves through. Dominion groundsmen like Leighton Gualdoni said crews are loading up for yet another busy night of dealing with the rare occasion of snow. "When it's this cold outside, we're still doing our normal work," Gualdoni said. "Hot or cold, this doesn't stop us from getting what we need to get done, done." Gualdoni said Dominion works constantly to strengthen the power grid, but sometimes frigid temperatures can put things on thin ice. "Tree limbs, they get heavier, they come down, wires begin to freeze and that gaining of weight causes sagging, and that can cause issues making contact with other wires," Gualdoni said. "When it gets cold, everyone is running their heat and that's pulling more power, and that influx in power can shock the system." When emergencies like that happen, Dominion crews are out braving this weather to restore power. He said the key to staying warm is bundling up and covering any exposed body parts. That's good advice for everyone. "Definitely layering up, wearing some nice thick socks, wearing some nice sturdy shoes — make sure they are not just going to soak up the water and moisture around you," Gualdoni said. He also has these words of wisdom for this winter. "Just stay safe and be vigilant," Gualdoni said. "It's going to be cold [and] wet. Roads freeze — it's important to watch out when you're driving. That's how a lot of issues happen people hitting poles so just be safe drive the speed limit." If you do see downed power lines, remember to stay away and call 866-DOM-HELP to report it.
