NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Gulf Coast experienced a rare and historic snowstorm on Tuesday, with record-breaking snowfall blanketing the New Orleans metro area.
Residents across Southeast Louisiana woke up to a winter wonderland as snowfall totals rivaled those seen in northern climates, disrupting travel and leaving many in awe.
New Orleans and Metairie led the region with an astonishing 10 inches of snow reported in some areas. Kenner recorded 8 inches at Louis Armstrong International Airport, with Gretna receiving up to 5 inches.
Nearby Chalmette in St. Bernard Parish recorded a staggering 11.5 inches.
Snowfall peaked at 10 inches near Des Allemands, while Hahnville and Norco saw totals of 8 and 7.8 inches, respectively.
Meanwhile in St. Tammany Parish, Eden Isle recorded 7 inches, with Slidell and Mandeville measuring between 5 and 6 inches.
In Lafourche Parish, Larose reported 10.1 inches, while Thibodaux and Galliano saw totals nearing 9 inches.
The snowstorm caused widespread disruptions to transportation and daily routines. Roads became impassable, flights were delayed or canceled, and schools and businesses were closed.
The National Weather Service urges residents to stay off icy roads, emphasizing the risk of accidents and further disruptions.
Authorities remind residents to remain indoors unless travel is essential, as freezing temperatures are expected to persist overnight, leading to hazardous road conditions through Wednesday and early Thursday.
