Discussing bill that would dissolve IPS schools into charters
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A bill at the statehouse is making waves in the local education and has sparked both concern and debate.
House Bill 1136 would dissolve any school corporation if more than 50% of the students living within its boundaries choose to go to a school not in the district.
WISH-TV contributor Emil Ekiyor, CEO of InnoPower, shared his insights on the bill and its potential impact on the city’s schools.
The bill, if passed, would dissolve IPS, citing that 61% of students in the district are enrolled in schools outside of the traditional public system.
Ekiyor, whose work focuses on community development, suggested that addressing the current situation requires a nuanced approach.
