GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – As below-freezing temperatures persist, it's essential to remember that your cars and plants require extra care to withstand the cold. Cold weather can affect various parts of a car, including the battery, fluids, tires, and engine components. Workers in Wisconsin risk hours in below zero temps to fix water main break "Cooling system issues, batteries, any moving parts in the engine, belt systems, stuff like that, stuff that is about to fail, the cold will expose that, and you'll have issues with components," said Jaramey Plager, manager of Auto Select Green Bay East. While unexpected problems can arise, Plager highlighted preventative steps to help keep vehicles running smoothly. "Getting your battery checked, that's probably the number one most important thing. If your battery is not strong enough, then it won't start, especially when it is this cold and everything is tight and harder to turn," Plager explained. "Getting your cooling system inspected, to make sure you don't have issues with the heat not working properly, and keeping your engine running correctly, and believe it or not, tire pressure is very important as well." At the same time, area greenhouses are taking precautions to protect plants from exposure to frigid conditions. Natural Beauty, a local greenhouse, relies on insulated heating systems to maintain the warmth necessary for plants to survive until spring. Wisconsin pilot killed in Vietnam War accounted for after decades "We normally keep our shade curtains closed. We're on the north side of our greenhouse, and this is plastic. The roof is plastic, and so there is a double poly-roof here which acts as a good insulator, but when the sun is out, it warms the greenhouse just nice," said Yvonne Behnke, grower manager at Natural Beauty. "We're in a cooler section that is just 50 degrees, 50-55. Our other greenhouse, most of it needs to be at 68." For individuals caring for plants at home, Behnke recommended moving plants closer to warmer locations where the temperature stays above freezing.
