Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation hears public input on new park north of downtown

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A new park is coming to Fort Wayne as a part of the Treeline District. An open house was held by Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation to provide the public with information on the park and to hear what those who will utilize the area want from it.
The Treeline District will be located where the Pepsi Warehouse once stood near Wells and Second Streets. The city bought the old building in 2022 for $4.5 million. It was torn down in February 2024. This location is across the St. Marys River from Promenade Park.

Part of the development will include an apartment complex with around 200 units, retail space and a public parking garage.
"It will essentially be an extension of Promenade Park and the rest of the Riverfront District that comes into that private space," said Deputy Director of Parks Planning and Landscape Chad Shaw.
As for the park, it will be around one acre. The public got the chance to voice what they wanted to see in this new park. From pedestrian to bicycle space to usable art and a vertical structure.

What is the vertical structure? That was part of the public input. Participants were able to provide input on what type of structure and atmosphere they would like to see this structure become.
"What I'm beginning to hear here that the community wants is a very attractive space that is versatile for them to be able to program how they want to program. We're not moving expensive building structures but we're making inviting spaces that are rewarding aesthetically," said Dan Wire, who was a participant in the open house.
There are currently no more open houses planned. Developers hope to have a ribbon cutting for the public portion of the development by the end of 2025.
